Technical Support (non-Real Estate Questions)

Q: What browser was the site designed for?

A: The site was built using Internet Explorer version 7 (IE7) Internet Explorer version 6 (IE6), Opera 9.10 and Firefox 2.0 for most testing. These browsers are the most popular on the market. There should be almost flawless compatibility with all recent browsers. We designed so that all browsers would be supported and retain a reasonable viewing experience. A Microsoft browser is absolutely, positively not required. We don't require "cookies" (except for Search Saver) , but we do require JavaScript for the best experience. Please send email to info@NorthernVaHomes.net if you experience any difficulties not mentioned on this page.

As mentioned on the home page, this site has been optimized for IE7, Opera and Firefox. The earlier Microsoft browsers are buggy (they simply don't follow standards - downright insolent) and should be upgraded. We have implemented workarounds for IE6 which disable the fixed-position left navigation bar and the footer These are the only "limp-along" side effects and have no effect on the important content.

Q: What should my screen resolution be?

A: We recommend 1024x768 or greater for the best experience.

Q: Hey, you guys are doing popups!

A: In rare cases, it doesn't make sense to keep you in the same window. We're not trying to sell you anything with this technique (but we hope if you see what you like, you'll use our fine services). If there is a need for a popup, we give you a link you can click yourself to quickly bypass the popup blocker software. Also, links normally warn you that they will open in another window. Mostly, these links refer to somewhere off the website. We are spyware-free and malware-free!

Q: What's with the yellow input fields?

A: These are fields that we need to perform the requested function. They are generally not required and our software will attempt to work with them no matter what. However, we require that you provide a valid email address when requested because it's needed (not because we just want to populate a lead database). So the short answer is that the yellow fields are highly-recommended.

Q: Tell me about the MLS Finder.

A: Our MLS Finder search tool is provided at http://mls.NorthernVaHomes.net. This data is updated on at least a daily basis and is based on the MRIS database. Only "active" and certain "pending" listings are provided because of license limitations. So if you see a property one day and it disappears, it's probably been sold or withdrawn. We provide all properties and fields that we are licensed to provide with no signup, fees, or obligation. Knock yourself out -- use it as much as you want. If you find this service down or sluggish, please call or email us!

Q: I'm getting errors when using some of the input forms. What's up?

Are you providing a valid email address? We need those to respond to you. Checking the email address is one of our defense mechanisms against hacking. Call us if you are providing a valid email address and you are still getting errors.

Q: Do I need other software to use this website?

A: Yes, but you probably already have it. We don't install software of our own design because it creates the appearance of something untoward and it generally adds no value. This is what you might need:

Q: How was the site built?

A: Most of the pages were built with Macromedia Dreamweaver (now owned by Adobe). Dynamic content is served using the PHP language. Adobe Photoshop is the graphics tool of choice.

Much "open source" was used to build this site. Our heartfelt thanks go to these fine open source projects:

Q: Who made your website?

A: Fortune Consulting Group, LLC is a related company that does websites part-time. Ask the ladies!
